Nicholas Latifi and Williams are parting ways after the 2022 Formula 1 season. The last real pay driver in the field has to go. Who will be his successor?
Williams has made its decision: After the 2022 Formula 1 season, they will do without the services and millions of Nicholas Latifi. The racing team announced on Friday via press release that it will not extend the contract, which expires in 2022. What will happen next, will bring better results or ruin prospects, bet in Kenya with 22Bet.
Latifi has come under increasing criticism recently because he was outshone in sporting terms by substitute driver Nyck de Vries at the last race weekend. The young Dutchman beat Latifi in qualifying after just one practice session to score points on his race debut, while his experienced teammate finished 15th.
“Even though we didn’t achieve the results we were aiming for, it was still a fantastic journey,” Latifi said in the press release. “I’ll never forget scoring my first points in Hungary last year and will open the next chapter of my career with special memories of this team.”
There is more shadow than light in Latifi’s Formula One career, however. With double-digit millions behind him, he made the step up to the premier class in 2020. In 55 GP starts, he scored a total of just seven world championship points. In 2022, he is the only regular driver who has yet to score a point.
At the 2021 season finale in Abu Dhabi, he triggered the safety car phase with an accident that ultimately made Max Verstappen the world champion. As a result, the Canadian even received death threats on social media.
“On behalf of the entire team, I would like to thank him for his three years of hard work with Williams,” said team boss Jost Capito. “Our time is now coming to an end, but I know he will still be fully committed for the rest of the season. We wish him the best for the future – in and out of the cockpit.”
Williams plans to announce a successor in due course. Nyck de Vries, who was convincing during his short-term stint at Monza, is a candidate – but is now highly rated by AlphaTauri. Williams junior Logan Sargeant and Mick Schumacher also have a chance of driving alongside Alexander Albon in 2023.
